Highland Park Produces Short Film About Fatal Shooting

The town used dashcam footage and dramatizations to recreate the incident.

Yesterday two Highland Park cops found out they would not be prosecuted for the shooting death of a suspect last June. After an independent investigation by the county sheriff’s office, a grand jury decided no indictments needed to be issued for the incident.

Dan Koller over at Park Cities People posted the video that the Highland Park Department of Public Safety showed at yesterday’s news conference. He’s right when he writes “Everything about Highland Park is first rate, and that includes videos explaining fatal police shootings.”

Skip to the 5-minute mark if you just want to see the dramatic footage of how David Hartman escaped a police vehicle at Airline Road and Mockingbird Lane and got shot.

I was waiting for an appearance by Joey Greco after hearing the music during the dramatization.

I think this is terrific and sets a precedent for disclosure and transparency that other departments should follow. When a deadly incident occurs, not only the Sheriff’s dept, the DA, and the grand jury should hear the details. The public has a right to know how their employees conducted themselves. I congratulate the HP Police.
