Happy Friday before Fat Tuesday.
Friday
Yesterday, Sarah Michelle Gellar did a Reddit AMA, and it made me realize how much I miss Buffy and the rest of the characters. So, it is with happiness that I tell you that Nicolas Brendon, AKA Xander Harris, is here this evening to sing some karaoke. Thanks to the episode “Once More With Feeling,” we know he’s got a halfway decent voice. It’s part of the Dallas Comic and Pop Expo, happening this weekend out in the Richardson. Tonight’s Slayer event is at the Doubletree, and the rest of the expo is at the Richardson Civic Center. Other Buffy guests include Adam, the half man-half demon created by the Initiative in Season 5, and Clem, the friendly loose-skinned demon.
End nerd stuff. Also tonight, the Texas Ballet Theater begins performances of a program called “Epic Masterpieces” at Bass Hall. Gloria was choreographed by Sir Kenneth MacMillan in memory of his father, who was killed in World War I. Serenade is George Balanchine’s ode to the beauty of ballet and form. L is an all-male tribute to Liza Minnelli set to percussion, which just sounds awesome. If you can’t make it tonight, the performances will run until Sunday.
Saturday
First, there’s Hooch and Pooch, Kitchen Dog Theater’s annual fundraiser. This year, it’s at the Green Zone in the Design District, and my little retreat, FrontRow, is a media sponsor. So yes, I’m biased, but it’s a ridiculously fun party and this theater has really given us some gifts this year. Namely, The Motherf**ker with the Hat, which you should see if you haven’t already. Help them do even more. The party includes food and grown-up drinks, a DJ, and a silent auction. You have to get one of Kitchen Dog’s doggy bags—you buy a mystery bag that holds spoils like tickets or jewelry, guaranteed to be worth at least double what you paid.
In Oak Cliff, there’s the big Mardi Gras masquerade at the Kessler Theater. This makes me sad that I no longer live right down the street. Your ticket gets you live music, Creole cuisine, and a guaranteed hangover the next morning thanks to those Hurricanes. Cash bar. Wear shoes appropriate for tearing up the dance floor.
Finally, Israeli dance company Kibbutz Contemporary Dance pays a visit to Dallas City Performance Hall. This should be a pretty unique performance from a company you won’t see again anytime really soon, so I highly recommend taking advantage of the opportunity.
Sunday
The Oscars! They’re Sunday night. Your couch is an okay place to be. But I have some other suggestions, including parties at the Angelika, Texas Theatre, and the Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth.
If you are a fan of chef Dean Fearing, he’ll be at the Foundry on Sunday afternoon—not to cook, but to play some jams with his band. Nice. Enjoy a beer and the outdoors.
