Friday
When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s your cue. Head to Klyde Warren Park tonight for a Valentine’s Day that’s as cheapskate-y as you want it to be. There will be live music from the Mad Men Swing Band, a dance floor, and complimentary desserts. You can buy beer, wine, and Champagne, or try for a table at Savor or Lark on the Park to complete the evening.
Also this evening, the Orchestra of New Spain (celebrating its 25th season) offers a concert of passionate flamenco music and dance at the Dallas City Performance Hall. It’s a whirlwind trip through Spain with the songs of Frederico García Lorca and Manuel de Falla.
If you’re somewhat less romantically inclined, there’s the Young the Giant concert at South Side Ballroom. It’s technically sold out, but there are a few tickets left on Craigslist and StubHub if you’re desperately seeking. I’m not quite sure of the real appeal of this band, aside from how safe-sounding it is, but it must be several someone’s favorite. One of the indie rock band’s lyrics is “Life’s too short to even care at all,” and there’s nothing wrong with taking to heart some overly simplistic, but ultimately dubious advice for a night. Cayucas and Vance Joy are the opening acts.
Saturday
Saturday evening’s big ticket concert, Neutral Milk Hotel, is also sold out, and it’s even more final—nothing on StubHub. However, the comedian Jeff Dunham, best known to me for his short stint on 30 Rock as the guy behind Bubba Jr., the redneck misogynistic hick puppet who heckled Liz Lemon, will bring his ventriloquism skills and myriad colorful puppets to the American Airlines Center.
Downtown, bring your most loyal companion—your pet, obviously—to Main Street Garden’s ‘My Furry Valentine‘ event happening until 2 p.m.. It’s complete with a costume contest, free pet photos, and assorted vendors.
Meanwhile, it’s your last chance to catch On the Eve at Theatre Three, since the musical ends its triumphant revival this weekend. See what all the fuss is about.
Sunday
The Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s ‘Love is in the Air‘ program started Friday, but the final performance is Sunday evening. As the title might suggest, this concert is for lovers—new, old, and would-be. Enjoy heart-stirring melodies that range from Mendelssohn’s “Wedding March” from A Midsummer Night’s Dream to the requisite Gershwin medley.
Finally, the Dallas Opera’s production of futuristic “robot opera” Death and the Powers finishes up performances at the Winspear Opera House. Trust our critic, Wayne Lee Gay, when he says this one spectacle you don’t want to miss.
