I’ve already given you a big gift this morning: a ton of stuff to do for the holidays.
Here a couple of highlights for today. First of all, the American Airlines Center hosts a big menorah lighting ceremony this evening. Jewish Mavs fans, unite. Israeli player Gal Mekel will be in attendance, and the first hundred people get a free Mavs yarmulke. You COULD just buy one on Etsy, but wouldn’t the official one be so much better? There will also be a kosher food truck.
Over at the Bass Hall, there’s the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra’s only performance of Handel’s Messiah this season. The well-known “Hallelujah” chorus is just mere minutes of Handel’s 1741 piece that clocks in at more than two hours. The FWSO presents a trimmed but no less meaningful version every year under the direction of David Thye, professor and chair of the conducting department at the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He conducts the Southwest Seminary Master Chorale through Handel’s powerful, enduring ode to the Christian faith.
Also this evening, the Magnolia offers up two different chances to catch a screening of Fellini’s 8 1/2. It’s the Italian director’s autobiographical send up to the struggle of his art that dips back into fantasy and memory as a filmmaker, Guido Anselmi, tries to put together a new movie amidst creative and romantic difficulties. The two showtimes (7:30 or 10:15 p.m.) make it a good opportunity to drop by Belly and Trumpet, one of this year’s best new restaurants.
