Tonight brings yet another opportunity to catch It’s a Wonderful Life on the big screen, this time at the Magnolia. It’s the last film in their Big Movie series of classic films, at least for the year, and there are two showtimes tonight. And even though the Moscow mule is no longer the great deal it once was, Union Bear is still my favorite place to grab a bite and a beer before seeing a movie over there. Of course, Mi Cocina and Taco Diner are always fine options.
Also this evening, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra hosts a Big Brassy Christmas, which should make for a special evening. Back in August, The Dallas Morning News‘ classical music critic Scott Cantrell lamented how little the Meyerson’s resident symphony orchestra employs its magnificent Fisk organ, an expensive gift from the Lay family more than 20 years ago. (Cantrell made a similar complaint in May of 2012, calling the 4, 535-pipe organ’s underuse a “scandal.”) This Christmas concert shakes the dust off with longtime principal organist Mary Preston at the keys. Don’t miss your chance to hear Preston accompany the DSO’s brass section in a performance of popular carols. The concert is almost sold out, but there are seats together left in the Dress Circle.’
Finally, if the thing that will make you really jolly is more Shakespeare in your life, the Angelika screens the Royal Shakespeare Company’s recording of Richard II. Bonus: this particular production stars the Doctor. From many accounts, David Tennant’s turn as the vain king Richard II who comes to regret his hasty decisions (and perhaps the ridiculously long wig he wears) is quite excellent. See for yourself this evening.
It’s also the last Tuesday night The Libertine will ever do half-price food. After seven years, it’s time to say goodbye to a cheap meal. As always, you’ll want to go early to avoid a long wait.
