Things To Do In Dallas Tonight: Dec. 12

Get your Hobbit on tonight at the Alamo Drafthouse.

Don’t touch Smaug’s doubloons.

A couple of especially irritating friends have already seen The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and told me all about how great it is. I’m sure it is, but I’ll be pretty Scrooge-y about it until I get to see it for myself.

It would not be a stretch to say that I am pretty excited about latest installment. The folks at the Alamo Drafthouse are, too, since the movie theater is devoting the entire day today leading up to the midnight release to all things Shire. In the lobby, you’ll be greeted by a quartet from the Richardson Symphony Orchestra playing selections from Howard Shore’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy score as well as An Unexpected Journey. There’s also a special Hobbit menu that includes first and second breakfast, “Elven lembas bread,” “Smaug’s Treasure Fries,” and more. From there, you can pick a ticket that includes a double feature or just the midnight showing. If I didn’t have our office holiday party tomorrow night, I’d be all over this. Go. I am already jealous.

Also this evening, catch a performance of Cara Mia Theatre Co.’s Romeo and Julieta at the Latino Cultural Center. The show’s scheduled opening was canceled due to the ice storm, so tonight’s the big night. The production combines Shakespeare’s original English with modern-day Spanish, rescuing this time-honored tale of doomed teenage romance from the clutches of Taylor Swift. The music is going to be good, too—Romeo and Julieta features an original score by local composer and percussionist S-Ankh Rasa. Your $25 ticket includes complimentary food and drink, so arrive early for the reception.

Finally, Raya has details of the coolest-sounding pop-up shop ever over on ShopTalk. Head to Tractorbeam Gallery tonight to buy yourself some presents, such as jewelry from Vera Jo and shoes from The Office of Angela Scott. (I badly want this boot, just in case Santa is reading this.) There will also be a bar, a DJ, and the Easy Slider food truck. What more could a girl want?

For more to tonight, go here.
