Depending on which organization you ask, AIDS Awareness Month is either October or December. For the purposes of this evening’s event, we’re going with October. Read this recent piece in the New Yorker about Truvada, the first treatment that both prevents the H.I.V. virus and suppresses it in people who are already infected, and the reason behind the slow adoption of the drug.
Tonight, arts organizations and individuals come together for a cause at the Winspear Opera House. A Gathering features more than 175 artists, singers, dancers, and actors in a variety of thought-provoking performances. All of the profits got to AIDS Arms, AIDSInterfaith Network, AIDS Services of Dallas and Resource Center Dallas, so you can feel good about springing for those somewhat more expensive mezzanine and orchestra seats. You kinda have to anyway, since the upper tiers are all sold out.
If you want to grab a bite before the show, remember that almost all of the Arts District restaurants are closed on Monday evenings (if not all day). Jorge’s, the exception to the rule, is a fine standby. Happily, we now have Lark on the Park. I’ve yet to try it (huge oversight on my part, I know), and it’s open until 11 p.m. The newly-opened Savor is also serving dinner.
