Things to Do in Dallas Tonight: Aug. 14

|
Probably about aliens?

Fun fact: This August actually marks my two year anniversary with Dallas! Let me tell you, this city has been absolutely wonderful to me. Y’all sure do know how to treat your Houston transplants well out here. If “most hospitable” isn’t a running theme in the great “Houston v. Dallas” debates, it really should be.

In my never-ending quest to learn everything about this city, I’ve been racking up hours at the Dallas Museum of Art’s DallasSITES: Charting Contemporary Art, 1963 to Present exhibition, and I’m pretty sure I discover something new every time I see it. For those who get a kick out of history and art, I definitely recommend spending some time with the artists of some of Dallas’ notable neighborhoods. My personal favorite is tracking the life and times of Oak Cliff. Every timeline is curated perfectly, which is definitely a hard feat when you’re working with over fifty years of art and community building. Right next door is DallasSITES: Available Space if you want to get a good look at the contemporary North Texas art scene, and down the hall (literally) is Hotel Texas: An Art Exhibition for the President and Mrs. John F. Kennedy, which spans President John F. Kennedy’s 1963 trip to Dallas and the eclectic art featured in his legendary suite. The museum will be observing late hours for this week and it’s still offering free general admission, so try to make a night of things. And the dine-in options are always good, but you can also try  Iron Cactus for a couple of Mexican martinis. The restaurant’s a transplant, too; show it some love.

If you’re like me and have yet to experience Dallas theater, don’t be like me! There are plenty of shows to see tonight, including Miss Saigon and The Aliens. One is a play about what happens when you don’t keep a promise made to your (doomed) lover; the other is a conversation about, among other things, music and mushrooms. I’ll let you figure out which is which.

For more to do tonight, go here.
