This morning, DISD superintendent Mike Miles, city manager Mary Suhm, and the wonderful step team from Garza Early College High School all joined us at Union Station to hand out 1,000 books to commuters to officially kick off The Big Read Dallas. It went really well. By 7:40, we were out of books, and we lost only one volunteer on the train.

Since today is our official kick-off, I thought what better way to get Frontburnervians reading than to give them a copy of our special edition book. There is a catch (or five):

1. In order to get the book, you must send me ([email protected]) a picture of your favorite place to read. If you need help finding a spot, the folks at bcWorkshop have you covered.

2. If you are one of the first 25 people to send me a photo of your favorite reading spot, you will then have to come to our office to pick up your book. I’ll notify you by 10 a.m. tomorrow if you were one of the first ones.

3. When you get here, you’ll be given two copies. One is for you. One is for you to give to a stranger. Not a family member, co-worker, roommate, etc. It must be a true stranger. If you feel like taking a photo for Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter, that would be great.

4. If you have an iPhone, you have to download our app and track how many pages you’ve burned through.

5. Then we want to see you at our events.

Also, follow along at bigreaddallas.org where you’ll meet some of our fun contributors (a 10th grader at the Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy, Ray Bradbury’s biographer Sam Weller, and other guest bloggers). Send me your photo, get your book, and start reading! (Oh, and if you think students don’t care about books or programs like this, take a look at this video taken during our kick-off at A. Maceo Smith New Tech High School.)

As one DART employee noted, we were an “aggressive” bunch. We ensured as many commuters as possible got a copy of Fahrenheit 451. Photo by David Higbee.
