If you’re planning to head to Addison this weekend for the Out of the Loop Fringe Festival, FrontRow’s Lindsey Wilson has a list of the shows she thinks are worth your advance ticket purchasing power.
Speaking of theater and festivals, TeCo’s new play competition continues this evening at the Bishop Arts Center Theatre. TeCo brought in Will Power, the Dallas Theater Center’s playwright in residence, to shepherd the little baby duckling plays to the stage. SMU students direct the one acts, and you can see all the finalists in a one-night sprint. The audience receives a ballot and votes for their favorite; at the end of the weekend, the winner gets $1,000. Not a bad deal. I’d also recommend Mesa for dinner and drinks, but I was at Bolsa for dinner over the weekend and the menu they have right now is quite, quite good. Try the duck with Brussels sprouts.
Show of hands: who reads The Man Repeller? I’m obsessed. So is Bradford Pearson’s lovely, wonderful wife, which is why we’re both heading to Neiman Marcus NorthPark tonight for Leandra Medine’s appearance celebrating her capsule clothing collection with the brand PJK. It’s in the Cusp section on Level One, so you too can casually wander by in your most killer heels. After that, there’s a La Duni mojito with my name on it.
Finally, we have the Dallas Theater Center’s production of Red, a Pulitzer Prize-winning play by John Logan about the artist Mark Rothko. The play concerns the relationship between artist and creation as we drop in on Rothko in late 1950s New York, working on a series of commissions in his studio and adjusting to the presence of his new assistant, Ken. Our critic, Lindsey Wilson, says to give it a shot. On the surface, the set up sounds tedious—a cantakerous old guy ranting about the sorry state of society and how people just don’t get art anymore. But upon reflection, she says, there’s a bit more going on.
