Usually it’s an off-evening for the performing arts, but Second Thought Theatre, kind and obliging folks that they are, is offering an “industry” performance of My Name is Rachel Corrie tonight at the Kalita Humphreys Theater – Bryant Hall. These Monday night performances just allow other theater folk the chance to see shows outside of their own, which is nice, and has the added benefit of giving you something slightly different to do. And if the name of the play sounds familiar, it’s an extended revisit of one of the hits from last year’s Festival of Independent Theatres. This one-woman drama (star Barrett Nash is also reprising her role) was culled from the journals of the real Rachel Corrie, a young American woman who was killed in 2003 by an Israeli Army bulldozer during a protest over the razing of houses along the Gaza strip. FrontRow’s M. Lance Lusk says this SST production cannot be missed. Why?
It is a rare and beautiful thing when a play becomes bigger than the sum of its already excellent parts. That is, when a piece of theater transcends simple entertainment and turns into a thought-provoking experience, not only because of its tragic and important source material, but because of a singular performance that provides a glimpse into the soul of humanity. My Name is Rachel Corrie is such a play, and Barrett Nash delivers such a performance at Second Thought Theatre.
High praise. The show closes this weekend, so if that’s looking busy for you, tonight’s your night. And speaking of doing different things, I’m thinking about dropping by the revamped Sunset Lounge on Ross for happy hour tonight. I’ve yet to go, and it’s $5 choose your own adventure drinks. That’s what I call it, anyway.
Over in Fair Park, there’s the Dallas Summer Musicals production of Mary Poppins. I don’t think I have to do much explaining with this one, but I will say that “Chim Chim Cher-ee” is probably a good cure for any post-weekend blues.
