See you all FrontBurnervians on April Fools.

Friday

Tonight, Jeff Whittingon of KERA’s Anything You Ever Wanted to Know, is not moderating a panel. No. He is fronting Psycho Pony, his Neil Young/Crazy Horse tribute band, at Lee Harvey’s. The set starts at 9 p.m., but you should arrive earlier and have a burger and a beer. If you wanna be fancy, go to Cedars Social first. The $6 Social Market seasonal drink is usually not a bad choice. But then make your way over.

In case of thunderstorms, there’s the Dallas Theater Center’s very indoor production of The Odd Couple. I saw it on Tuesday. I took my mom and sat next to a delightful, somewhat older DTC subscriber. We all enjoyed ourselves very much. Such is the power of Neil Simon, and the enduring delight of his plays. FrontRow’s Lindsey Wilson reviews it here. You should see it, if not this night, than another. It runs through April 14. It’s three acts long with two intermissions. When you walk out you’ll know where the time went but you won’t car, not even a little bit.

Sunset Lounge on Ross is my current favorite pre or post Arts District theater spot. The good is good, the happy hour is crazy good, and the drinks have alcohol in them. Not crowded. Don’t overrun it all at once, okay, I want to be able to find the bar.

Saturday

It’s rare when one of those gallery art party things we keep seeing pop up charges admission, but this one has an open bar and an interesting cause. Gloria: The 500 Preview is put together by organizers extraordinaire Green Bandana Group. They’re trying to get word out about something they’re calling The 500, a “social club” experiment that will support the work of young, emerging, and developing artists in Dallas with consistent commissions and exposure. Saturday’s event at Conduit Gallery has live music from the always excellent Danny Church Band, art exhibits, and an open bar. So there’s that. Dress code is “Sunday best” and uh, hats and weird headgear is encouraged. Whatever. Do you.

Meanwhile, Deep Ellum temporarily turns into folk (influenced) music city. The Big Folkin Festival starts in the afternoon and carries on nicely into the evening. The line up includes band such as Holy Moly, Fox and the Bird, The Os, Kirby Brown, and many, many more across four stages. Tickets are cheap, too, so snag one or two online while you can.

Sunday

Jubilee Theatre in Fort Worth starts preview performances of the new musical Trav’lin this weekend. This means cheap tickets, and on Sunday, it’s an afternoon matinee. First of all, if you haven’t been to a show at this particular theater in the past couple years, I highly encourage you to do so. Cool things are happening there. Second, this is Trav’lin‘s first full production after the show was scouted from The New York Musical Theatre Festival. It’s a chance to see a work still being formed, which is a really amazing thing. Finally, it just sounds like a good time. The plot centers around three couples trying their luck at love in 1930s Harlem. The score was originally created by celebrated Harlem Renaissance composer J.C. Johnson and features the bluesy jazz that once filled the streets and clubs of Upper Manhattan.
