Happy Hobbit Day. I’ll probably be seeing that again this weekend, but for those you uninterested in wizards riding a sled powered by rabbits, there’s all this other stuff.
Friday
Our Matt Shelley is killing me with these Craft & Growler photos. He makes me want to go there immediately after work, order whatever they recommend, and sit forever. It’s all decorated for the holidays, too. This plan actually might be good for you, if you’re trying to rush On the Eve, the new musical happening in the tiny Magnolia Lounge in Fair Park. It’s completely sold out, so your chances of getting a seat are slim.
Craft & Growler is there to catch you when you fall, though. Or since you can get growlers to go, it might just prepare you for the BYOB madness of Ash Fridays, since the Green Bandanda Group is throwing yet another party at their Fair Park studio. As always with them, there’s art, hijinks, and free drinks.
For a decent dose of holiday cheer this evening, husband-and-wife country duo Bruce Robison and Kelly Willis are taking the Wyly Theatre stage for a concert of their Christmas hits. Austin folk singer BettySoo supports.
Saturday
You didn’t think Klyde Warren Park was going to skip the season, did you? There’s a tree and everything. One question, though, right off the bat. Can we leave that thing up through summer? Maybe it’ll provide some shade. Regardless, there will be all-ages holiday activities all afternoon, including photos with Santa and live reindeer, and then a tree lighting ceremony as the sun goes down.
Should you need something more adult, walk over to the Winspear Opera House, where the Winter Warmer is happening in Annette Strauss Square. This celebration of craft and seasonal beers has a charitable element, as some proceeds benefit Cancer Support Texas, and features breweries such as Austin’s (512) and locals such as Franconia and Four Corners. You can still get tickets, which include 12 samples, online, or walk up at the box office. Remember, 21 and up only. (And fine, okay: if you use the promotion code “SIGELS,” you get ten bucks off your ticket.)
Saturday night is also your last chance to check out Cara Mia Theatre Co.’s Milagritos, a play based on short stories by the wonderful Sandra Cisneros, running at the Latino Cultural Center. Our critic, M. Lance Lusk, says seeing it is more akin to a religious experience.
Sunday
Brunch at Bolsa. After a sort of unsatisfying weekend afternoonish meal at a place that shall not be named, I want to do it right. Then, and I credit the lovely Joslyn over on D Moms for this wonderful Sunday Funday idea, a swing over the DMA for the Posters of Paris exhibit. I don’t know how I’ve gone so long working across the street from the museum without seeing it. Joslyn tells us that there’s also a fun create-you-own poster activity, and you don’t have to pay the extra to walk through the exhibit to participate.
