I can’t say I’ll really miss Hostess desserts. They just weren’t a huge part of my life growing up, thanks to a mom who never bought my brother and I a bunch of junk food and a dad whose cooking rivals a professional’s. But every once in awhile, I do love a good fruit pie. So quick, everyone. Go tell Brad how wrong he is for ranking weird orange cupcakes, something virtually unknown in Texas, as the top Hostess product.
Friday
Tonight you have the opportunity to check out the fancy footwork of the Stephen Petronio Company, a New York City-based contemporary dance ensemble that has yet to grace a Dallas stage. Choreographer Petronio often collaborates with fashion designers, artists, and musicians (including my beloved Rufus Wainwright) to create a distinctive, memorable repertory. They’ll dance at the Winspear Opera House this evening, and you can still snag the sky-high tickets for $12.
Also this evening, there’s a launch party for the first issue of a new arts print publication, Semigloss., at Oliver Francis Gallery. Both Peter and Christopher Mosley, our music contributor, make mention of this happening over on FrontRow, but it sounds like an excellent time with good people (Chris, by the way, is helping choose the music). Semigloss. is the brainchild of Sally Glass, who you might recognize for her artwork around town or presence at Oak Cliff’s Oil & Cotton. There will be art and drinks so you can toast to the new publication.
Saturday
It’s not quite Thanksgiving, but the city is ready to start celebrating that other holiday, the one with all the tinsel and a chubby home invader. City Lights is here, once again, with Christmas fun for everyone all along Main Street downtown. In addition to the tree lighting and ceremony that concludes with a visit from Santa, there will be an outdoor market, face-painting, ornament-making, music, food and more. Plus, younger folks can enjoy the return of the whimsical Neiman Marcus crawl tubes. I’m always so tempted with these.
Over at the Granada, hometown favorite Rhett Miller plays a solo concert for a good cause (proceeds from the show go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation). The Gourds, a quirky bluegrass band out of Austin, support.
Sunday
Mary J. Blige‘s American Airlines show has been postponed. Fortunately, there’s other options, such as Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part II.
Kidding. Obviously. For fans of the Clifford, The Big Red Dog books, the AT&T Performing Arts Center is offering a musical version of this beloved series. Can you believe Clifford is 50 years old? I cannot. Anyway, this should be a fun time with Emily Elizabeth, Clifford, and the rest of their friends–the sort of kid-friendly show that I actually wouldn’t mind seeing.
Also on Sunday, Snider Plaza is lighting up its Christmas tree and offering holiday music, treats, and visits with Santa throughout the afternoon. The North Texas Food Bank will be there collection donations and frozen turkeys, again for that holiday that comes before Dec. 25. Before the festivities, grab a goat cheese and avocado sandwich (or, fine, something with meat) and a beer at East Hampton Sandwich Co.
