I have a good feeling about this weekend, potentially because this weather is so amazing. Let’s just get on with it.
Friday
So many choices. First up, Erykah Badu and her side project, The Cannabinoids, are on at the Granada Theater. They’ll play some new stuff, and remix some of Badu’s music. This is also a prime opportunity to check out Sundown at the Granada. Go early, sit on the patio. Raya has details on the drinks here, but I liked the Jefferson Airplane (good thing, because it’s the only “specialty cocktail” option with gin). I also liked the fact that they offered gluten-free flatbread dough. It was a really pleasant, pleasing surprise. I haven’t seen that anywhere else.
You could also spend some time outdoors this evening along Flora Street, as both the Crow Collection and the Dallas Museum of Art are having their Late Night activities. The Crow Collection is a great place to take the kids, if you have one or more, since their program centers around the Chinese New Year and offers face painting, art activities, and a glow-in-the-dark dancing dragon. At the DMA, there’s a Jean Paul Gaultier-inspired costume contest and a hatmaking workshop lead by milliner Cassie MacGregor.
Saturday
In anticipation of the day when robots will conquer the human race, the Museum of Nature and Science is hosting the North Texas Lego League Regional Championship Robotics Tournament at the Hockaday School. As such, 50 teams of “engineers-in-training” (AKA kids who are smarter than than me) will duke it out on a robotics obstacle course and present their research to a panel of judges.
After that, head to the Design District for Upstart Production’s production of Melancholy Play. I mentioned this in passing last week, but now I’m wholeheartedly endorsing it, not least of all because one day, I’d love to arrive at a theater and not get asked “Who are you here for?” As if having a friend or family member in the cast or crew is the only reason a young person would voluntarily see a play in Dallas. Anyway, I thought the Upstart did a wonderful job with Sarah Ruhl’s lyrical, language driven play. It’s a pretty stage, there’s live cello music, and you’ll probably laugh. Sunday
In case you didn’t know, we’re closing in on the end of Dallas Fashion Week. Sunday night’s fancy gala is the place to be. Raya told us on ShopTalk earlier that “a slew of Dallas celeb types (including Rayann Fowler of Big Rich Texas, Steve Kembel from 103.7, and Glenn Pakulak of Bravo’s Most Eligible Dallas) will model the wares of local designers Linda Rowe Thomas, Henry Coleman, and Gadol.” The best thing is that the proceeds benefit the South Dallas AIDS Walk.
