I do not bleed orange, maroon, or sports. And I’ll be honest with you. I’m not exactly looking forward to the exponential increase in painted up clowns descending on my ill-chosen neighborhood like a bunch of Bud Light-fueled locusts. But I do like barbecue, so I’m not completely a lost cause.
Friday
Krista posted all the information about tonight’s Red River Barbecue Shootout on SideDish yesterday, but here’s a quick rundown: pitmasters from Texas and Oklahoma smoked up a bunch of St. Louis-style ribs and competed in a preliminary round of judging last night. Tonight, the two semifinalists, Leo’s BBQ from Oklahoma City and Cousin’s in Fort Worth, are ready for your taste test. The champion pitmaster gets $1,000, so sample both dishes, enjoy a beverage, and pick a winner. Eleven Hundred Springs, Norman’s Damn Quails, and Backporch Mary will perform, so bring blankets to spread out on the lawn.
Saturday
The Texas/OU game is sold out. Craigslist or bust. This guy is entertaining any and all offers for a single ticket, with the condition that the buyer is a Texas fan. Put on your thinking cap, or, you know. Open your wallet. Otherwise, you can check out Raya’s top ten picks for where to watch the game here. And may I suggest avoiding the State Fair like a newly discovered bedbug infestation? Because parking is going to be murder. Also, do not drive to Arlington. Taylor Swift fans are massing at Cowboys Stadium, 360 is closed, and there’s a Rangers game.
For those disinterested in all of the above, check out the final performance of DanceAfrica, featuring all-female vocal and dance ensemble Giwayen Mata, local African drum and dance ensemble Bandan Koro, and the Dallas Black Dance Theatre. Prior to that, Scardello hosts a very patriotic cheese party until 5 p.m., with ten American cheese for $10 bucks. I love cheese so much. I’d argue that Tillman’s goat cheese-stuffed tater tots belong in the top 1% of snacks. But I do have it on good authority that Scardello’s sandwiches are worth writing home about, so maybe grab one of those for a pre-dance dinner.

The Fiesta Latinoamericana in the Arts District celebrates Latin American cultures with a full day of music and dancing that’s great for families and kids. There will be food, a variety of workshops, crafts, magicians, and more.
