Just picked up the mail and there was the envelope with the return address that nobody wants to see — Internal Revenue Service. I started hyperventilating. Do I call Husband Unit or Much-Abused-Accountant? Decide to open envelope first and see how bad the news is. I thought we had done everything according to the rules. In fact according to national standings, we were on the verge of qualifying for food stamps. Then I calmed down a bit before I reached for the letter opener. It wasn’t registered, so they weren’t getting ready to haul us in quite yet. I slid the blade across the top of the envelope and the enclosed two-page document officially read that they changed our account to correct our interest and/or dividend income for 2009. Before the change we had a credit of $12 credit. Increase in tax because of this change was $12. Interest charged was $.02. Account balance after this change was $.02. They closed with a note saying,
“The change we made to your account resulted in a very small balance. We adjusted your account to show that you owe nothing. Please don’t send a payment.“
Along with the two-page note and insert page about the IRS’s automated services was a return envelope. I’m just wondering what I’m supposed to do with this envelope? Send them a thank you note, perhaps?
