Words With Friends Tournament Round 1 Wrap: Rhett Miller of the Old 97s Advances

|

32 games down, 32 players eliminated. Look for an updated bracket in the morning. For now, here are notes from some of the games that I haven’t yet mentioned on FrontBurner today (yes, there really are some I haven’t mentioned ).

Singer Rhett Miller of the Old 97s beat salesman Pete Mata, 407 to 320. Rhett says:

I got a bingo with “treated” that put me ahead for good.

Jessica Oyhenart of Newtoy Inc. beat D Empire art director Jamie Laubhan-Oliver, 361 to 352:

Jamie played “noodle” for 52 points to even the score halfway through, it was a seriously close game after that!

Photojournalist Mike Fuentes over interior designer Beth Dotolo, 390 to 280:

Beth said at one time she had all vowels and most of the time I only had one vowel…

Cristen Hixson showed People Newspapers’ Josh Hixson who wears the brains in the family, 323 to 222:

Down to the wire! Josh fell on his sword and resigned at 6:59, because we couldn’t finish in time with 8 letters left. Busy day!

And magazine editor Jessica Jones, whose 395 to 302 win over nurse Doreen Riccelli played out over 19 hours:

Slow start to the game (a total of three plays took place between the hours of midnight and 1 pm) but speedy finish, with a majority of the action taking place in the last hour of regulation. Had to pull into several parking lots on my commute home to play my final turns (thanks for the hospitality, Airport Budget Suites and EZLoans on NW Hwy). In the end, it was the power letters that made the difference; though I was peeved to not get a single X, J, Z, or Q, Doreen got stuck with two in her final seven tiles — a death sentence for even the most gifted WWF player.
