By this weekend, the February print edition will be hitting newsstands, and you can read all about the University of Texas at Dallas’ artist residency program, Centraltrak. You will learn in the piece that Kate Sheerin has stepped in to replace former director Charissa Terranova, who left the organization just before Joan Arbery’s piece shipped (whew!). Today Centraltrak sends the official word about Sheerin, an NYU grad who has worked at SMU’s Meadows Museum and curated about town, including a show at David Quadrini’s now-shut-down Angstrom Gallery. New Director of Centraltrak AnnouncedÂ
Dallas (Jan. 20, 2010) — A. Kate Sheerin has been named the new director of the Deep Ellum gallery and artists’ residency, Centraltrak, which is part of The University of Texas at Dallas School of Arts and Humanities.
Sheerin graduated from New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts with a master’s degree in Art History in 2002. She returned to Texas in 2003, and was appointed assistant curator at Southern Methodist University’s Meadows Museum, where she developed the contemporary and regional collections, exhibitions and programming. Since leaving the Meadows, Ms. Sheerin has worked independently on several exhibitions, including curating “El Franco Lee II” at Angstrom Gallery in Dallas and co-curating “Intimidades: Public Access/Private Views,” which opened at Banamex in Mexico City and toured through Mexico. Ms. Sheerin also has published in several exhibition catalogs and written online exhibition reviews. At present, she is pursuing her doctorate at UT Dallas in the Aesthetic Studies program.
           “We are delighted to have Kate Sheerin at Centraltrak,” said Dennis Kratz, dean of the School of Arts and Humanities. “She brings an ideal combination of knowledge and experience to build on our previous success and bring the artist residency program to an even higher level of excellence and impact.”
Sheerin says her main goals for Centraltrak include “strengthening the residency’s ties in the local community and extending support for our program outside of our local community. I would like to see greater participation by visiting artists in the programming of the residency gallery, and hope to bring in artists from vibrant countries that we have not tapped so far, such as Brazil, Cuba, China, and India.”Â
Upcoming events at Centraltrak include the “Transitive Pairings: Body Object” exhibit, running Feb. 13 — April 24, and the Urban Sprawl Symposium on Feb. 20.
