Another Crime At The Old Book Depository

The Press Club of Dallas took a stab at resurrecting the Katie Awards Saturday, following a highly publicized judging scandal. About 200 people gathered at the Sixth Floor Museum for a stripped-down version of the gala, with 23 statuettes given out, none at all for the broadcast media. But one attendee–Dallas Business Journal staff writer Joyce Tsai–won’t soon forget the bash. When Joyce made for her car in the Sixth Floor parking lot at evening’s end, she found the driver’s-side window of her Honda Accord had been smashed into a billion pieces, her iPod stolen. Freelance writer Pablo Lastra gallantly helped Joyce brush the glass shards out of her car and deal with the cops, then saw her home safely. I’d paid a uniformed “attendant” $5 for the privilege of parking near Joyce; meantime, she says, the attendant had waved her through without asking her to pony up. Looks like the old Texas School Book Depository hasn’t shaken its evil vibe.
