Leading Off (9/25/08)

1. DISD trustees might decide to call for layoffs today, with as many as 750 jobs cut. Or they might not. If they don’t go ahead with layoffs today, there’s a pretty good chance they have decided on at least one budget cut: Dr. Michael Hinojosa. Oh, and they should find out if DISD’s Hail Mary pass (shifting some salaries over into the land of federal grant money) will work. Spoiler alert: it won’t.

2. More budget talk! The City Council approved the new $2.7 billion city budget in an 11-2 vote. If you know anything about recent votes around the horseshoe, you know who the two are. Hint: one said it was “an insult to the residents who pay taxes.” The other said, “It’s a terrible budget for the citizens of Dallas. People can’t afford it.” Oh, also? If you’re not from Dallas, you really don’t want to get into an accident in Dallas. But the city has around $1 million hoping you will.

3. Finally, an Army Reserves sergeant who’s a student at Dallas Baptist had his ride pimped against his will: someone sprayed “soldiers are murderers” over the hood of his yellow Jeep Wrangler. I’m kind of immediately regretting the decision to put that last item up, just because of the dozens of threadjacks likely to occur in the comments. Do your best to stay on point.

  1. Who would hijack a thread?? Am I right, Zac-cy Pootie Pants, Tippy Too Too? Right? Am I right?

    More Trey.

  3. I can only channel that kind of crazy once a day.

  4. Daniel says:

The spray-painter was probably a Republican and spray-painted the outrageous phrase to discredit those who oppose the war.

An opposite tack might be to spray-paint “Kill our enemies, the Iraqis!”

Or, as I once spray-painted on a certain someone’s vehicle, “Alicia Foster takes furniture and CDs that were never hers!”

There. Consider this thread all kinds of jacked.

  5. Tobie says:

will we have live blog feeds from the meeting this afternoon? I need something to keep me awake closer to the end of the day, and that’ll do it

  6. Bethany says:

Can we call Zac Zac-cy Pootie Pants for the rest of the day?

  9. Sky Masterson says:

I’m curious as to how much the accident response fee for non-residents will be. Anyone know?

  10. Zac Crain says:

It’s more than $100, I believe. Haven’t seen the exact number.

  11. B says:

Will this accident fee be levied against both drivers? Can you opt out of emergency response? As in ‘No thanks, I will catch my own ride to Parkland’

  12. Bethany says:

Yeah – cab fare to the nearest hospital has got to be cheaper.

  13. Seven says:

What if a Dallas resident hits you and you don’t live in Dallas?

  14. Daniel says:

Then you have to pay $200.
