A few weeks ago, I received in the mail the fantastic new self-titled album by The New Year, the band headed by brothers Bubba and Matt Kadane, late of the great Bedhead. (Fun fact #1: Sheffie Kadane, councilman for District 9, is their unclerelated, somehow.) The New Year is the sort of great left turn most musicians aren’t capable of negotiating so deep into their careers, and they’re clearly proud of it.
Given that, the Kadanes have scheduled their most extensive touring to support it. They have a slightly new lineup for some of that touring: Jeff Ryan will man the drums for the Texas swing, and Centro-matic‘s Will Johnson is with the band for the entire tour, playing third guitar. (Fun fact #2: Johnson’s addition means all three members of Funland have played guitar for The New Year; Peter Schmidt is a semi-regular member of the band, and Clark Vogeler, now of the Toadies, has guested on occasion.)
