Poor Media People Help Rich People Help Poor People

|

So it was last night that among the bluebloods sweeping into the Ritz Carlton for the Chiapas Project gala were a bevy of D Magazine and People Newspaper luminaries: fashionistas Stephanie Quadri and Sarah Eveans, supersaleswoman Cynthia Smoot with DallasCEO editor Glenn Hunter (in Glenn’s imagination it was a date; for Cynthia it was all work), and PCPeople‘s adorable new society editor, Tierney Kaufman. These young media gurus were there to lend their hand in solving world hunger, which they did by scarfing down a free three-course meal from Ritz chef Dean Fearing. ABC’s Ann Compton, a stalwart of the network’s Washington bureau, was the speaker and shared stories from her 30 years in the White House press corps. She said Laura Bush told her that she and Dubya are definitely making Dallas their home 15 months from now, but that rumors that they have purchased a $6 million lot in Highland Park are false. The best part of the evening was learning about the growing influence and effectiveness of micro-lending, where those trapped in poverty are given a small loan of $50-$150 and use it to literally pull themselves out of their bleak circumstances. Very inspiring.
