RE: D and S.I. Team Up to Tackle Southlake

|

As Tim said yesterday, we both have stories on the Dragons in the current issue. I read S.I.’s piece last night. It’s a profile of Southlake’s quarterback, Riley Dodge. My story is about how eerily perfect the town is. Which brings us to a point both of our pieces neglect. Next month, Southlake plays Northwestern Miami at SMU. In S.I.’s preseason poll, Southlake is ranked No. 1, Northwestern Miami No. 2. But next month’s game almost didn’t happen.

Last season, Northwestern’s star running back, Antwain Easterling, was accused of having sex with a 14-year-old girl on the school’s bathroom floor. The coaching staff and principal knew about the statutory rape but never reported it to the police. In June, the principal was indicted for that failure. The superintendent considered canceling the season, but decided instead to fire the coaching staff.

I have a tough time believing concealing a crime would happen at Southlake.
