Meanwhile, for what it’s worth, here’s the definition in my Webster’s New Universal Unabridged Dictionary:
pa*pist. Usually Disparaging (Italics theirs). —n. 1. a Roman Catholic, esp. one regarding as being a strong advocate of the papacy. — adj. 2. papasitical.
All other variations of this here — and in a couple of other dictionaries I quickly searched, also carry a “disparaging” or “derogatory” notation. But I yield to those directly involved.
