RAINY DAY RESTAURANT RUMOR

Nancy Nichols

A high-falutin’ FrontBurnervian Foodie send this tidbit.

I heard that several of the bartenders from N9NE left because they were not making enough $$$.

How can you not make money when one of the margaritas runs $69? Must too many pre-game beer drinkers.

BELO’S AL DIA EDITOR HEADS UP ASNE

Rod Davis

Props to Al Día‘s Gilbert Bailon for being elected president of ASNE (American Society of Newspaper Editors). There’s also been some talk that ASNE may eventually drop the “Newspaper” from its name in an effort to reflect a changed media universe.

Another dog park story. And don’t even get me started on owners who don’t pick up poo.

RE: IF I HAD A GUN …

It’s a shame those pooches couldn’t get along like these otters. My cynicism is under a cuteness attack. Does not compute.

A hound-loving FBvian tells of her own bad-dog experience. Let me just say, these sorts of stories make me insane, and they’re why I don’t take my dog to a dog park.

RUNNING OF THE BRIDES

If you are like me and going to a wedding once a month, then you probably know someone who will benefit from a huge sale happening at Stardust Celebrations April 2- April 15. They are relocating to Plano on April 17. Therefore, they will be cleaning out their closets and reducing 80% of the items in the current store. If you need a gown to wear, a veil, greeting cards, gifts, a fancy dress for a little girl, garters, almost anything related to a wedding, then be sure to take advantage of this sale. It’s nothing like world-famous Filene’s Basement’s sale that happens once a year in Boston, but they do have fabulous designer gowns by Badgley Mischka, Henry  Roth, St. Pucchi, and Elie Saab. And getting a good deal on a designer gown is hard to come by. On your mark, get set, go.

BioDFW is holding a series of breakfasts to brief the city on where the action is in research and development. So if you’re interested in, say, technology transfer from TAMU to NIH to TETF, by golly you ought to be there.

IF I’D HAD A GUN, THERE WOULDA BEEN ONE DEAD DOG

Eric Celeste
|

‘Nuther pit bull story. About 8 a.m., I grabbed my walking stick and took my hound for his morning walk near the corner of Abrams and Glasgow. We went a new route today for no particular reason. When I returned, I ran into my neighbor, who took her dog and her young son (in a stroller) on my normal route. Her heart was still racing, because they’d been charged by a pit bull (white, with a large black spot). She had yelled, a truck pulled over to assist, and the dog ran off. As we were talking, I saw the little death machine jogging down the street, toward the many kids who walk to Long Middle School.

I called the animal control department. The operator stopped me before I’d gotten half the story out. “We’ve had many calls on that dog this morning,” she said. I just checked, and only now is a service vehicle on its way, and only because they received another series of calls at 10:30 this morning.

Hey, pit bull owners, feel free to e-mail me about how it’s the owner, not the dog. I’ll read them while I’m searching for a gun on Craig’s List.

IT’S RAINING SUGAR

I drove by Sprinkles last night on my way home and there was no line. Maybe it was because they were closed. But several nutty FrontBurnervian Foodies waited in line. Here are their stories.

So, early evening Husband Unit and I waited in line for 30 minutes in storm conditions with the rest of the Park Cities for a six-pack of Sprinkles (Red Velvet, Coconut, Banana, Black & White, Mocha and Dark Chocolate).  During the wait, there was incredible bonding of the group waiting in line. (Reminded me of waiting all night for tickets to the Beatles concert.) As we waited, we watched cars cruising the area sizing up the line that went around the corner. After getting out booty, we headed home and sliced up each cupcake into quarters. We even went to separate rooms to sample our little portions. Findings: They’re very good and much better than cupcakes from our kitchen or any shop around town. But if given the choice between Sprinkles and Petit Fours, PF wins hands down. They are works of art; both the frosting and the cake are vastly better; and the line is 25 minutes shorter.

Beatles and booty in the same paragraph? That’s one hip chick. Another more or less sober reader sez:

This FBvian hears you loud and clear. My wife and I went to NYC in October and I got dragged 8 blocks thru in the rain so we could get a frickin’ cupcake at Magnolia Bakery. Once we finally worked our way thru the line (which thankfully wasn’t very long…did I mention it was RAINING?), I ordered a lemon cupcake with vanilla icing and sprinkles. Sure, it tasted good, but I couldn’t help but look at my wife and say “It tastes like a cupcake.” The beer at the Irish pub down the street tasted much better.

Well, that’s all peachy. I’ve been to Magnolia, Sprinkles, and Petit Fours, all of which I love. But wait in line?  The only thing I’d wait in a short line for is this. Or maybe this. Gotta go play with my hula hoop.
