While you and I were roasting chestnuts on an open fire, a behind-the-scenes bloodfight was being waged to unseat Texas House Speaker Tom Craddick. Plano’s Brian McCall claims he has the votes, but then so does Craddick. Texas Monthly’s Paul Burka has been in the thick of things. Scroll up from the bottom to get the full flavor, but Burka’s last post indicates that Craddick’s days are numbered. McCall’s heaviest support comes from Democrats, although he is busily rounding up more Republicans. Some are resisting, calling him a “moderate,” which leads me to ask, after looking at his down-the-line conservative voting record, what constitutes a “moderate” in Texas politics. Somebody who’s reasonable? Somebody who is willing to negotiate? Somebody who’s willing to actually get something done?
