HOW TO TREAT THE LANCE ARMSTRONG STORY

|

In 2005 we brought word of Columbia Picture’s interest in Lance Armstrong’s autobiography. Today, the WSJ has an update (sub. req.). Given Lance’s divorce from the woman who saw him through cancer, the break-up with Sheryl Crow (before she herself developed cancer), and the tabloid-y way Lance parties it up with Matthew McConaughey, Hollywood is wondering how to play the Lance story. Asks the Journal:

Is it a “Chariots of Fire”-style tale of inspiration through athletics? Or something — as one person connected to the project suggested to Mr. Armstrong himself — along the lines of “Raging Bull,” the gritty and often unflattering film about boxer Jake La Motta?

My bet–and hope–is with the latter. Says the film’s director, Frank Marshall, “This is not a puff piece. This is not going to be Lance the beauty queen.”
