It shouldn’t even have to be said, but I have to stand up 100 percent for the Frisco teacher’s trip to the DMA with fifth graders. Hard to think of it as even “ill-advised.” Not counting the children’s exhibits frequently at the DMA, the entire museum is a treasure of culture and enlightenment that should be a part of any decent education, and fifth graders are certainly old enough. The statues or paintings of nudes are hardly offensive except to the most freakish of prudes. Is the Bible to be put off-limits because of some of its bawdier passages?
What’s ill-advised is a kid having parents who object to taking their children to a superb museum. But as has been observed, we’re not generally free to choose our parents.
If anyone is put on probation, it should be the teacher’s principal for going along with the kind of suburban Babbittry that makes us all look like idiots.
