Ron Southern is president of the American Tract Society, which happens to be located in Garland. Founded in 1825 in New York, ATS is one of the nation’s oldest evangelical services. It’s also, according to Charity Navigator, one of the nation’s most inefficient charities. One reason might be that on revenue of $2,241,923 (in 2004, the last year for which numbers are available), ATS paid Mr. Southern $510,285. In other words, out of every dollar donated to ATS, 23 cents goes into Mr. Southern’s pocket.
