My friend–and now fellow parishioner–Jimmy Fowler has a personal essay in the latest Fort Worth Weekly on his recent coversion to the Catholic faith. I love the title and sub-head: “The Flaming Heart: Why should gays be denied the pleasures of Catholic guilt?” He does a very good job of describing how the paradoxes inherent in Catholicism attracted him, a gay man, to the Church. Speaking of paradoxes, I had the honor of being Jimmy’s sponsor and of standing by him as he was received into the mystical Body. Or maybe there is no paradox. On politics Jimmy and I disagree, but in the light of eternity that just means that we’re probably both wrong.
