JOHN CORNYN IS SERIOUS ABOUT FREEDOM OF INFORMATION

It has been his pet cause ever since he was Texas AG, and now as a senator he hasn’t relented a bit. His latest push is to release all government-funded research on the internet. Scholarly publishers, as is to be expected, object strenuously. I’ve studied the scholarly publishing market–which is 80 percent controlled by for-profit conglomerates–and I can tell you the publishers make a very tidy sum on “copyrighting” research taxpayers paid for. Cornyn and co-author Joe Lieberman are right to object.
