LOCAL TORMENTED ARTIST TO SHOW WORK

|

Roberto Munguia is a painter who has himself a new Web site and a show opening next week at the Conduit Gallery. I mention this only because Mr. Munguia teaches art at Cistercian Prep. In fact, he taught me art at Cistercian Prep. In a recent e-mail exchange with some old school chums, I was reminded how horribly we tormented poor Mr. Munguia in class. One time–I wasn’t involved, swear–the kids used a long bench wedged between a wall and an outward-opening door to trap Mr. Munguia alone in his own classroom, until someone came and rescued him. Reflecting on this and other ways we tormented him, I felt guilty. But then I realized that tormented artists make better art. And I felt better again.
