SAYING NO TO THE TAX MAN

|

I just returned from my informal hearing at the Dallas Central Appraisal District. I must admit that the employees are friendlier than I expected, considering a too-full waiting room (on two floors!) and tax-protesting residents who look as if they’re being arraigned. At least twice I heard the phrase, “I’m going to have to sell my house to pay the taxes.” But the real treat was a retired gentleman wearing a sweat-stained baseball cap who said that he was happy to be there ’cause otherwise he’d just be sitting at home twiddling his thumbs (he made the motions). He also told a funny story to anyone within earshot about his visit to the governor’s mansion in Arkansas earlier this month.

But was my protest successful? Yes, it was, making me two-for-two lifetime (the other was in Travis County). I think I’m going to produce a “How to” book on the subject. Tim, would that be of interest to you?
