“Kickback City” is what Jim Schutze titles his report this week on sworn testimony before a legislative committee on police intimidation and corruption in Dallas. That testimony, by the way, comes from people like Police Chief David Kunkle. Some Council districts, it turns out–notably Leo Chaney’s, according to the testimony–are being run like organized crime rackets. Okay, all you members of the African-American Pastors Alliance, the Black Chamber of Commerce, and Dallas Citizens Council, here’s real life in the big city. What are you going to do about it?
A sidenote: Why are we reading this in the weekly Observer by a guy stationed in Dallas? Doesn’t the Morning News, which is often called a daily, have four people in its Austin bureau? Helloooo, bureau chief Christy Hoppe…you awake down there?
