Welcome to SideDish’s weekly dispatch of need-to-know News Bites, from quiet closures to opening updates and everything in between, including coronavirus-related intel.

Community Brewing Co. Moves into (Much) Bigger Digs

The brewery and taproom has been closed since last year when COVID-19 hit Dallas, but 2021 bears better news: They’re movin’ on up. Specifically, Community Beer Co. announced on its website that it’s relocating to a huge 70,000-square-foot facility between the north edge of the Design District and the Medical District at 3110 Commonwealth Drive. And Community isn’t just expanding its beer operations. The brewery will build a two-story taproom, full restaurant, biergarten, music venue, and other venues for events on the renovated Pegasus Park campus. Community will also begin distilling spirits, too. It’s making big moves in every sense. Read more about the soon-to-be sweeping beer campus on the Community Beer Co. website.

One Barbecue Spot Returns, Another Delays Its Reopening

The Dallas Observer has an update on the status of two Dallas-area ‘cue joints. After suffering damage from the winter storms in February (frozen, busted pipes, water damage, the works), Zavala’s Barbecue reopened on April 10. Get some ribs in Grand Prairie to welcome them back into smoky fray. Meanwhile in McKinney, Hutchins Barbeque is still working to reopen after a fire broke out on New Year’s Eve. Its planned April comeback has been pushed back until summer.

The Rustic Owners Opening a New Restaurant Called Joe Leo

Early last year, El Bolero’s Fitzhugh Avenue location quietly and quickly shuttered. Now we know what’s going into the former Tex-Mex restaurant space: another Tex-Mex restaurant. Dallas Morning News reports that the owners of The Rustic will open Joe Leo, named for co-founder Kyle Noonan’s Mexican grandfather Joe Leo Romero. It will open for delivery only on April 19, with an opening-day party to follow on May 5.

Ellen’s Opens an Outpost in Casa Linda Plaza

Fans of Ellen’s homestyle meals will have another location to devour plates of meatloaf, chicken-fried steak, and other classic breakfast and brunch dishes. The West End restaurant is opening a sibling spot at 1152 North Bucker Boulevard in the Casa Linda Plaza, per Dallas CultureMap. While it may not entirely fill the void felt by the Highland Park Cafeteria’s 2020 departure, at least diners nearby can find solace in all-day breakfast. It’s slated to open sometime this summer. That’s not all. In an email, CEO Joe Groves shared that Ellen’s is” expanding northward to a location already known as a breakfast destination: the former home of Crossroads Diner.” They are plotting a late summer opening at 17194 Preston Road, suite 101 in North Dallas. The Dallas Morning News has even more details about Ellen’s expansion plans for 2021.
