Everywhere Samantha Brown Eats in Her Places to Love Dallas Episode

The Dallas-born globetrotter and PBS television host digs into barbecue, chocolate, Mexican cuisine.

In the third season of Places to Love, travel host Samantha Brown visits places like Sonoma, British Virgin Islands, and New Zealand. But for episode six, which airs this Saturday, she’s in Dallas. Brown, born in Dallas though her family lived here for only a brief time, swings by restaurants, shops, parks—but it’s that restaurant bit we’re interested in.

The episode opens with a familiar sight to anyone who’s trod down Main Street around 11 in the morning: the line at Pecan Lodge. At the Deep Ellum barbecue favorite, Brown and her dining companion share the Trough, a protein-packed power platter consisting of a slab of beef rib, one pound of pork ribs and brisket, a half-pound of pulled pork, and three sausage links. You should know by now that ordering the Trough allows you to skip the line.

After a stroll through Klyde Warren Park—presumably to walk off that ‘cue—the travel host meets up with Katherine Clapner at Dude, Sweet Chocolate in Bishop Arts, where the flavor mastermind behind the sweets talks “big and bold and in-your-face” treats made with everything from sarsaparilla, bleu cheese, and hibiscus. In the same neighborhood, at Wild Detectives bookstore, Brown shares a glass of wine with co-owner Javier Garcia del Moral, the engineer-entrepreneur also opened Sketches of Spain last month just down the block.

And Brown circles back to Deep Ellum where she meets chef Regino Rojas. She skips the Revolver Taco Lounge side of things in favor of Rojas’ Purépecha, his freewheeling multicourse dinner that explores the cuisine of the indigenous Michoacana people for which the experience is named. “My mother makes the best mole in town,” says Rojas as the two dip tortilla into the rich, deep brown sauce.

The Dallas episode airs on KERA-Channel 13 this Saturday, February 22 at 11 a.m., and again on February 26 at 1:30 a.m. and March 28 at 11 a.m. As of February 12, it’s been available to stream online.
