Last month we checked in with Jack Perkins. He’s a busy man. When he isn’t working the door at Maple & Motor, he’s overseeing the ground-up construction site that will be his new Mockingbird Diner.

Like Jack, the project is ambitious. He’s tapped some great talent for his kitchen. Jeana Johnson (Mot Ha Bai, Good 2 Go Tacos), Jason Perkins (Filament), Sabrina Metersky (FT33), and Rosie Martinez (19 years at Parigi).

The restaurant has obtained a certificate of occupancy, but has not announced an opening date. But Jack has decided to open on Thanksgiving Day and serve free food to anyone who is a looking for a place to celebrate this holiday with a traditional feast. “I started doing this four years ago because I knew enough orphans who needed a place to be,” Perkins says. “Now, nothing I do gives me the same feeling. I didn’t do it last year and it was like losing a friend.”

Freebird will take place at The Mockingbird Diner from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on November 23. 3130 W. Mockingbird Ln.
