The 2017 State Fair of Texas Big Tex Choice Awards semi-finalists were announced this morning. Some unclear items on the list: deep-fried chicken noodle soup on a stick and fried El Paso. But the item we’re the most perplexed about is the Fat Smooth.
What is a Fat Smooth? Your guess is as good as ours.
Here are some hypotheses from my colleagues:
A fried smoothie
A butter-heavy thing
Smoothie made with lard
A Blizzard from DQ
An overweight R&B singer
A spoonful of whipped butter
Bacon and brisket smoothie
A bag of frosting
I reached out to the folks at the State Fair and they responded mid-brainstorm:
“Fat Smooth is three delicious Belgium mini cream puffs on a skewer, dipped in a Café Du Monde beignet batter. Fried until golden brown, then dusted in powdered sugar and drizzled with a chocolate and caramel sauce.”
Not what we were expecting, but there you have it.
