Do This: Cocktail Expert to Shake It Up at the DMA Tomorrow

Tomorrow night, in one of these little-publicized events that sneak up on you sometimes, author and cocktail god David Wondrich will speak for one hour at the Dallas Museum of Art.

The occasion is a musical soirée loosely organized around the ongoing exhibit Shaken, Stirred, Styled: The Art of the Cocktail, with mezzo-soprano et al. I haven’t made heads or tails of the event, but I do know that prior to this cocktail-inspired musicalia is a cocktail hour and Q&A with David Wondrich in the Founders Lounge; the good folks at the DMA have one of the world’s leading experts on cocktails tucked up in the heights.

In 2007, Wondrich published Imbibe!: From Absinthe Cocktail to Whiskey Smash, a Salute in Stories and Drinks to “Professor” Jerry Thomas, Pioneer of the American Bear Featuring the Original Formulae. The book immediately won the first James Beard award to be given for cocktail writing; it was updated and reissued in 2015. Wondrich was around for the beginning of the American craft cocktail revolution and grew up along with it. The subject of Imbibe is Jerry Thomas, who penned the Bartenders Guide of 1862 that is acknowledged as the first complete cocktail listing.

Small Brewpub based its cocktail menu around a rotating selection from the 1862 guide in question, as much as a way to work through it themselves as anything else.

Wondrich himself is a man of all trades who came to cocktails via a circuitous route: in turns musician, house painter, law clerk, English professor, music writer (for The New York Times among others). He is currently Cocktail Correspondent for Esquire. His second book, Punch: The Delights (and Dangers) of the Flowing Bowl (2010), has an app.

David Wondrich is speaking at the DMA tomorrow in what sounds like an interesting casual venue for a $20 ticket price. If nothing else, it will be good conversation and a drink. Get tickets here.
