On October 17 we put together a list of the 16 most notable taquerias in Dallas. Some of the restaurants mentioned are best known for their authentic Mexico City bites, while others throw tradition into the meat grinder and plate whimsical, over-the-top tacos.
Our goal was to provide you, the readers, with a vast cross-section of restaurants (excluding major chains) and to let you decide your favorite.
Last week, the selection was narrowed to two restaurants:
After a heated final round of voting, the results are in. Drumroll, please…
(OK, you’ve read the headline and already know the winner, so this isn’t actually suspenseful, but I needed an excuse to embed a scene from the “Blackwater” episode of Game of Thrones.)
The Mother of Tacos and winner of our bracket is: Resident Taqueria.
Owners Amy and Andrew Savoie opened the trendy Northeast Dallas taqueria last fall. The couple prides themselves on using fresh, made-to-order tortillas, local produce, and slow-braised meats. Playful and popular spins on classics include the braised pork shoulder taco topped with pineapple, cabbage, and guajillo; and the house-made chorizo taco topped with onion, potatoes, and smoked tomato crema.
We sent talented photographer Matthew Shelley out to photograph owners Amy and Andrew (see above). His ability to capture a dragon so perfectly is impressive. I hear they’re fidgety critters. When I asked him about his technique he responded:
“Lifelong training. And mozzarella. Dragons love mozzarella.”
Great advice.
Well, there you have it Dallas. Thank you for participating in the Game of Tacos and writing the final verse of this Song of Tex and Mex. Until next time.
