Curious situation going on at Rex’s Fish Market. As we reported on Wednesday morning, Rex’s Seafood and Chophouse in Lakewood was locked out by the landlord for nonpayment of rent. I called owner Rex Bellomy who also owns Rex’s Fish Market on West Lovers Lane for a comment. He did not return my call. Today I’ve received three messages. One from a customer who tried to pick up an order at Rex’s this afternoon who arrived to find a “closed for remodeling” sign on the door. I made a call. The person who answered the phone said Rex was not available and he confirmed they were closed to “do some repainting and remodeling.” He said they would be closed for three weeks. I told him I’d been contacted by a customer trying to pick up an order and asked if they were going to honor any orders that have been placed. His answer was a curt “not at this time.”

Seems odd that an owner can’t afford to pay rent, but can find the money to remodel. I hope the person was telling the truth and Bellomy and company are regrouping to reopen. But don’t do disservice to your customers. At least call them and tell them their orders will not be processed. Stinky business.
