The Localist: Ballow’s Famous Texas Chili Seasoning

The recipe was written on a piece of paper and kept in a drawer in the family house until it made its public debut in 1992.

The Ballow’s “Famous Texas Chili Seasoning” has been in their family for more than 100 years. The recipe was written on a piece of paper and kept in a drawer in the family house until it made its public debut in 1992 when the family opened a café in LaRue, Texas. The family kept the recipe a secret even after 1992, only serving it to customers in the café. The chili won so many awards and became such a big hit that they sold the cafe and put all of their focus into packaging and distributing the famous chili seasoning.

The seasoning is made with all-natural spices and each box contains two individual packages and has easy to follow directions on the back. The ingredients are listed on the side but what you will never know is how much of each spice is in the package. This allows the fanily to keep their award-winning seasoning a secret. They have kept everything basic, from the packaging to the directions to the website. When you have a great product like this all you really need to know is where to get it.

The family company offers serving options and low fat preparation techniques on their website. I purchased my box of Ballow’s at Brookshire’s, a small grocery chain normally located on the outskirts of Dallas. To find out more about Ballow’s or to order online visit their website.
