Hundreds of people gathered under the florescent lights of Fair Park’s Tower Building yesterday afternoon for the Big Tex Choice Awards. Eight finalists competed for fried food supremacy. A panel of judges, which included Devin Harris, Drew Pearson, Dan Rodo, John Tesar, and Tiffinni Young, voted for their favorites.

Christi Erpillo nabbed the award for the best tasting item for Fernie’s Holy Moly Carrot Cake Roly: Cinnamon bread filled with carrot cake, raisins, and julienned carrots. The cake is coated with cream cheese and breaded in a mixture of panko, graham crackers, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

Isaac Rousso won the title of most creative for his wine-based smoky bacon margarita. The neon green frozen drink is infused with smoke and sprinkled with bacon bits.

All of the nominated dishes will be available during the State Fair of Texas which runs from September 25 through October 18. Check out photos from the Big Tex Choice Awards below.
