Making a sandwich in the morning elicits a strength that some people don’t possess before noon. That’s why breakfast sandwiches are usually pulled from the microwave on the way out the door, or reserved for slow weekend mornings. To offer more variety to this truth, we’ve compiled a list of places to seek out a sandwich to get your day started. It wouldn’t hurt to grab a cup of coffee, too.
The Sandwich: Bacon, Egg n’ Cheddar Sandwich
Breakfast hours: Monday through Friday, 7 to 11 a.m.; Saturday and Sunday 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Pulling up to Start is much different than pulling up to a fast food restaurant. A patio laced with strung lights and a mural of artfully painted ingredients covering a nearby wall create a more upscale feel than any other drive-through I’ve seen before. And the breakfast sandwich follows suit. Thick slabs of bacon and fresh scrambled eggs are piled on top of an English muffin. All of this is held together by a melted slice of sharp cheddar cheese. This isn’t your average fast food breakfast.
The sandwich: Fried Chicken Biscuit
Breakfast hours: Sundays by reservation, 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Paying homage to Texans’ love of the Whataburger honey butter chicken biscuit (HBCB, as we call it), The Grape has brilliantly crafted a fried chicken biscuit for the more matured palate. Fried chicken breast is covered with shredded cheddar cheese and honey butter. The meat sits between two warm jalapeno-cheddar biscuits. Served with their coleslaw on the side, this southern breakfast sandwich would be enough to prompt cravings any time of the day.
Sandwich: The Breakfast Sammie
Breakfast hours: 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
I am of the particular opinion that in order to make a sandwich great, it should be on a croissant. That’s just one reason Mudsmith’s sandwich pulls at my butter-indulgent heartstrings. To add to the decadence, the bacon slices are hearty enough for Chuck Norris and the eggs are fluffy and cooked to the perfect consistency and draped with cheese. Add a cup of their coffee to the order and you’ve got yourself the perfect breakfast.
The sandwich: Breakfast Club
Breakfast hours: All day
When there are pancakes and waffles on the menu, it’s hard to see past the syrup and butter. But if you look a little harder you’ll often notice a breakfast sandwich in the same column. The Breakfast Club is more than just a John Hughes movie at Bread Winners, it’s a hefty meal. Two fried eggs are sandwiched between two mayo-lined, grilled slices of ciabatta. The sandwich is layered with bacon, ham, cheese, lettuce, and a slice of tomato. Paired with a side of fruit, the sandwich could sustain someone for an entire day.
The sandwich: Mega-Egg Sandwich
Breakfast hours: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The décor and atmosphere at this quirky Deep Ellum diner makes even the newest customer feel like a regular. This sandwich is served on sourdough bread and is spread with Tabasco mayonnaise and topped with a fried egg, ham, avocado, tomatoes, and cheddar cheese.
