The first weekend of spring has arrived with misty fog and a rainy forecast. Although the weather has perked up some in the last week, it’s still a bit chilly outside, and many farmers markets are waiting on clear skies and warm air to set up for the spring season. However, a few markets will be open this weekend with fresh selections sprouted from the dewy earth, ready for your palate, skillet, or that pretty vase sitting on the table.
Green’s Produce and Plants
Plants are arriving daily at Green’s, making the selection of greenery for gardens quite large. They have more than 50 varieties of tomato plants, and an array of flowers, herbs, succulents, ferns, and vegetable plants, along with artisan pottery, garden décor and organic potting soil to anchor your pickings. They also have harvested, ready-to-throw-in-the-basket produce for those who opt to skip the whole DIY gardening thing, with many products grown locally. Check out the section of “Texas-grown” items such as Green’s label jellies, preserves, sauces, and dressings.

McKinney Farmers Market
Saturday will be the last winter market of the season for McKinney Farmers Market before the regular spring market season begins. Elliott Grows, the hydroponic lettuce farm in Argyle, will be there with their variety of leafy lettuces and garden fresh herbs. Rosa Family Farm is bringing their velvety goat cheeses to market as well, with flavors such as tomato-basil, honey cranberry pistachio, lemon rosemary, and candied jalapeño. Spoons Café Food Truck will also be there. Perhaps they’ll be serving up some of their signature soups and sandwiches, or classic comfort foods.

Good Local Markets
Greens, greens, and more greens are the features of this weekend’s markets at Lakeside Farmers Market and Vickery Meadow Farmers Market, two of the three markets that make up Good Local Markets (formerly known as White Rock Local Market). Both Lakeside, staking this weekend as its first market of the season, and Vickery Meadow will have an abundance of leafy greens such as kale, chard, and lettuces at market, great for spring salad mixes and that always lingering new year’s resolution that waxes and wanes this time of year.

Four Seasons Markets
This European-style market will be in Fairview and Richardson this weekend. The Fairview indoor market will have vendors featuring artisan breads, tamales, locally made pastas, spice rubs, jams and preserves, soaps, and more. The Richardson market will have spices, local produce, grass-fed meat, nuts, ice creams, jewelry and more.
