The Localist: Zukali Chipotle Kafé Salsa

This locally made salsa is a sweet and savory mix of chipotle, roasted tomatillo, and coffee.

Here in Texas, many of us use salsa on everything. It’s pretty much the equivalent to salt and pepper for some Texans — spicing up any dish. Having grown up in Dallas, I can confidently say that I have tried a ton of different salsas, and Zukali Chipotle Kafé Salsa is by far one of my favorites. It is locally made, and the main ingredients include chipotle, roasted tomatillo, and coffee. That’s right, coffee.

I prefer my salsa warm. Few places in Dallas serve it that way, but anytime I prepare it at home, I heat it up. Zukali salsa is one that fares well this way. Also, per their suggestion, and in my agreed opinion, it goes well over different types of meat. I recently came across a recipe for flank steak tacos using Trader Joe’s BBQ Rub with coffee and garlic for the meat, which is then topped with Zukali salsa. I can’t wait to try it.

My most recent meal topped with Kafé Salsa was a great little combo of scrambled eggs and tamales. It was delightful. And while the coffee in this slightly sweet mixture of roasted tomatillo, and chipotle is not overwhelming, you can definitely taste it.

Not totally into the coffee-in-your-salsa thing? Zukali has several other options, including their signature, Fire Roasted Jalapeños salsa.

Apparently I’m not the only one in love with Zukali, as they have been featured in Redbook, and Food & Wine. And they were one of the big booths at Dallas’ first annual Salsa Fest back in September.

You can purchase Zukali products at Jimmy’s Food Store, Central Market, Opening Bell Coffee, and other stores around town. Visit www.zukali.com to find retail locations, and read more about their story.
