Farm-to-Market Report: Weekend of October 17 – 19

From celebrations to chili cook-offs, there are several reasons to explore Dallas-area markets this weekend.

From celebrations to chili cook-offs, there are several reasons to explore Dallas-area farmers markets this weekend. Also, don’t miss the chance to check out Frisco Farmers Market’s final weekend of the 2014 season.

Coppell Farmers Market
If looking for a family friendly atmosphere, the Coppell Farmers Market is the ideal place to be this Saturday, as the market will host its fourth annual Food Day for Kids from 8 a.m. to noon. In conjunction with several markets across the nation, Coppell will host a day of nutrition-targeted, hands-on activities for children. Some of the activities will include kid-sized farmers market shopping, Cathy’s Critters petting farm, story time on the lawn, and live music by Boxcar Bandits. Grand Prairie Farmers Market
Grand Prairie’s Phat Daddy’s Barbecue will be part of the market’s Restaurant Showcase beginning at 10:30 a.m. Sample some of their fare while learning more about the restaurant. From popcorn and pumpkins, barbecue to burgers, the Grand Prairie Farmers Market will host an array of activities throughout October. 120 W. Main St.

Frisco Farmers Market
This is the market’s last weekend of the 2014 season, so if you haven’t scoped out the venue, now’s the time. The market has both staple and unique vendors such as austiNuts, Biscotti World, Tea and Tisane Salon, Texas Hill Country Olive Oil Company, and more than thirty others. There are also several vendors who offer organic and beauty products. The Edelweiss Soap Company has a colorful and creative selection of soaps handcrafted from goat’s milk. They also offer a bath salts and natural lip balm, all made at the hands of merchant Julie Wehmeyer. For a complete list of vendors, click here. Vickery Meadow Local Market
As the market rounds out its first month of operation, patrons can expect an abundance of pumpkins, fall squash, okra, greens, and mushrooms. Vendors such as Empire Baking Company, Brazos Valley Cheese, Cowgirl Whey Cheese, Demases Farm, and JuHa Ranch Caliper Herb Farm, as well as many others will be on site. Another treat: Don’t miss out on Texas Worm Ranch’s worm wine. The market will have arts and crafts from vendors such as Aliona K, Zenwill, Best Bug Bait, Hobos & Moonshine, and The Letter Lounge.

Waxahachie Farmers Market
This weekend, Sharon Perdasofpy will demonstrate the use of bone (hair pipe) and Czech glass seed beads in the making of Native American earrings. Next to the Master Gardners’ booth, there’ll be a sampling of minestrone soup made from late summer vegetables. Of you’re hunting for pumpkins, Gary’s Greenhouse still has quite a few. You’ll find market favorites such as fried pies, spicy salsas, fruit butters and preserves, pickles, breads, and all-natural tamales. 410 S. Rogers, Waxahachie
 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.

White Rock Lake Farmers Market
There’s no excuse not to check out the market this weekend. Join in the fourth annual White Rock Local Market Chili Cook-off, and let your voice be heard through the People’s Choice Chili vote. The tasting portion of the competition will kick off at 10:30 a.m. and end at 12:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 per person. Before challenging your taste buds, check out the market’s vendors, who are some of Dallas’ most notable bakers, farmers, artisans, and ranchers. Good Earth Organic Farm, In A Pickle, Noble Coyote Coffee, and Texas Honey Bee Guild will be on hand, as well as several others. Also, the NorthPark Preesbyterian Church’s Reverse Food Truck will be on site, welcoming patrons to bring or buy foods to be donated to the Vickery Meadow food pantry. 702 N.
