In today’s episode of As the Restaurant Turns, we find dashing general manager Victor Hugo and talented chef Eric Brandt abandoning their posts at the tony Bistro 31in Highland Park Village. Together they crossed the Trinity River and took refuge in the quaint old house in Oak Cliff (31115 N. Beckley) that has been home to several restaurants, most recently The Outpost. After a few coats of paint and some sprucing up, they will open VH, a New American restaurant with hopes to “elevate [the] Oak Cliff food and social scene to another level.”
I’m not familiar with Victor Hugo’s talents, but Eric Brandt is a hell of a chef. Hugo (oh, it is so difficult to avoid Les Misérables references) spent five years as a manager at Al Biernat so that tells me the dude has a gift for hospitality. Perhaps this duo will be the team that can elevate this space into a successful business instead of a snakebit temple of doom.
The entrees on the dinner menu run from $15 for a VH burger to $24 for a grilled filet with Texas bourbon peppercorn sauce. You’ll also find green chile hummus, sweet potato Johnny cakes, salads, and sides such as cheddar grits, and spicy broccolini. Take a look at the menu here.
Of course, there is local beer and craft cocktails all $10 or under. I can’t tell you much about the wine list or the interior, however after looking at the photo gallery, I spot a neon cobalt blue couch that looks like the top spot to sit for pictures.
