Spring is one of my favorite times of the year. The farmers markets are beginning to pop back up, wildflowers are in bloom, and Rosé wines are starting to appear on store shelves. It is a gentle reminder that summer is right around the corner.

One of my favorite farmers markets I’ve visited so far this year is the White Rock Local Market in Dallas. Small in stature but full of substance, you can find everything from artisan loaves of bread from Empire Baking Company to vermicompost tea for fertilizing your garden.

My beloved vegetable finds last weekend were beautifully vibrant bunches of baby turnips and breakfast radishes from Good Earth Organic Farm. I made a walk-through of the market before I began shopping, and their kohlrabi caught my eye. By the time I made it back to pick some up, what little they had originally was sold out.

What impressed me most were the greens attached to the turnips. They were in remarkable shape, with leaves that were healthy and vividly green, ideal for julienning and adding to salads. Turnips are one of my favorite vegetables. Whether roasted and glazed, or shaved and combined with other spring crops for vegetable salads, I can not get enough of them.

Good Earth Organic Farm is located about an hour northeast of Dallas in Celeste, Texas. Known for growing unique and heritage crops, you can find offerings like burgundy okra and mizuna. They also raise heritage breed chickens and grass-fed lamb.

Turnips are incredibly versatile. Their flavors concentrate beautifully when roasted and are a delightful addition to gratins and root vegetable mashes. During the warmer months, I love to break out my mandolin and slice them thinly with other vegetables and dress them in zippy lemon vinaigrette for a refreshing shaved vegetable salad.

Good Earth Organic Farms produce can be found at the McKinney, Coppell, and White Rock Local Markets. You can find out more on their website at www.goodearthorganicfarm.com
